Synchronicity Alert #4: Huey walks into Huey...

... and the Universe Conspires with Him

Background: I read about this guy in an article in the November issue of Smithsonian Magazine. It is about Aaron Huey, who one day decided to take his dog Cosmo for a walk. To New York. From California. He reminded me of my friend Devrim, and the nomad spirit in general.

The passage below is an excerpt from the article. It captures one of those wonderful moments when the universe conspires to help you unexpectedly and with perfect timing. Has this ever happened to you? Pay attention, it happens all the time.

"HUEY, ILLINOIS - For the first hour out of town I am flying. The beats in my headphones make me walk fast and make me raise my fists in the air on this shoulderless highway. Shoulderless but not soulless. There is much soul here today, and five miles out of town there is a town called Huey. Population 200. The post office is open. I am told by the woman inside that it is the smallest post office in Illinois. Ten feet by ten feet. Orange tint to the sky with some grand sailboat clouds that pass over a place where many 18-wheelers park. Another restaurant... People smile at the highway man. They do not see people like him very often. That is worth it. The smiles. The questions. The how you do it. Check on Cosmo and fill up her water. Feed her some meat scraps from the kitchen. When I come back inside, there is a $20 bill sitting on my table on top of my bill. I think a couple that had been listening to me talk left it for me on their way out. I didn't even get to talk to them. I smile. I was going to run out of money tomorrow. Now I will not."

R.I.P FP

Thank you for your gift
You gave the world your daughter
We honor your soul

Federico
Though I hardly knew you
I know of you
By the words your daughter spoke of you
And every action she takes
Demonstrating the qualities you helped to instill in her
And the desire in her core to make you proud

I know you
Through the brief and powerful conversation we shared
Across languages, hemispheres and generations
On the night before I married your daughter
I promised to take care of her
As you explained to me that she was your life
With conviction that transcended language

And now having witnessed
Your daughter's heart break
I promise to honor your life
And avenge your murder
By taking care of your daughter
And supporting her in her efforts
To make you proud

Lessons Learned this Weekend

Amazing people like Pat Tillman inspire me to be a better man.
Sorrows can never really be drowned.
Beer before liquor...
Though it is scary, facing the music feels so much better than delaying conflict.
She loves me in spite of my flaws.
She is even more amazing then I realized. Again.

Words from the Mountain

I sit perched on a rock near the summit of Piestewa Peak
I ponder the breeze blowing South to North
Is there a breeze more pure than the one
felt when standing higher than all other points
as far as the eye can see?
Only the eagles, the angels and
the bumble bee buzzing in my ear know.

Synchronicity Alert #3: Emerson... Elementary

While driving, I was thinking about the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson that I had read earlier this morning... then looked up and to the left and saw the sign for Emerson Elementary School. Made me laugh.

A few gems from Nature:

NATURE
A subtle chain of countless rings
The next unto the farthest brings;
The eye reads omens where it goes,
And speaks all languages the rose;
And, striving to be man, the worm
Mounts through all the spires of form.

~~~~
"Why should n0t we have a poetry and philosophy of insight and not of tradition, and a religion by revelation to us, and not the history of theirs?
~~~
"...the universe is composed of Nature and the Soul."

~~
"To go into solitude, a man needs to retire as much from his chamber as from society... But if a man would be alone, let him look at the stars."

~
"If the stars should appear one night in a thousand years, how would men believe and adore; and preserve for many generations the remembrance of the city of God which had been shown! But every night come out these envoys of beauty, and light the universe with their admonishing smile."

~~
"...few adult persons can see nature. Most persons do not see the sun... The sun illuminates only the eye of the man, but shines into the eye and the heart of the child. The lover of nature is he whose inward and outward senses are still truly adjusted to each other; who has retained the spirit of infancy even into the era of manhood. His intercourse with heaven and earth, becomes part of his daily food. In the presence of nature, a wild delight runs through the man, in spite of real sorrows."

~~~
"In the woods too, a man casts off his ears, as the snake his slough, and at what period soever of life, is always a child. In the woods, is perpetual youth."
Waves & Cycles
Sometimes things must get worse
before they can get better.
I tell myself this in an act of hope
that the worst is behind us.
And if it is not, it is for a reason:
maybe four more years of downward spiral
will awaken the people of this country.
Though it is scary to imagine what more it will take
than the obvious, intentional lies and evil
benefiting the few, the powerful
at the cost of the many, the powerless.
Have we not yet hit bottom?
What more must happen before
the people claim their power and demand integrity?
Sometimes things must get worse
before they can get better.
Halloween 2004
Funniest Halloween Moments That I saw:
  • Shaggy confirming what those who know, always suspected.
  • Fred wanting to fight a fireman (or Fred simply wanting to fight). Warning: Fred does not like bells.
Funniest Halloween Moment that I did not see:
  • Apparently at Acme in Tempe, two "ladies" from V's class got into a fight after we left. The funny part is that they were in costume (Little Red Riding Hood vs. The Construction Worker). I forgot to ask who won.
